Premier People: Brooks Murphrey, Senior Project Manager, Dermatology

Premier Value: We Aim High

When my husband and I started a family, I wanted to find a job with flexibility, solid benefits, and clear growth opportunities. Both my sister and husband worked in clinical research, so I talked to a friend who was recruiting in the field, and I was hired as a clinical trial assistant. I quickly discovered the pace of research was good for me, and I was excited about the potential career trajectory.

In 2016, a friend at Premier Research told me about an open position, and I decided to check it out. The size of Premier really appealed to me, and it was a great environment, with lots of energy. I started as a project specialist, then grew into a project manager position. I’ve had to grow and learn constantly. But early on, I had a great line manager who said, “Brooks, you can do this, and we’ll help you along the way.” It’s been a perfect opportunity for me.

I feel like we are true partners with our sponsors. I’ve had the opportunity to really connect with my clients as if I’m a part of their team. I am focused in dermatology and support a sponsor that has been working with Premier for many years. The company was just 20 people when we started working together. They received FDA approvals for several compounds we worked on, and now they are roughly 200 people. We had to be flexible as they grew. Our services evolved as their infrastructure changed. Going on that ride with them, knowing them personally, seeing how we’ve been able to help transform their company is so exciting.

My team is incredible. We’ve had great success with the studies I’ve been on—and I know that will continue with future projects. I like to think of the project management group as the backbone of our success at Premier. We are held accountable to our customers for project delivery every day. Along with our internal team, they rely on us to set the pace for delivering milestones. We are also the first point of contact, building customer relationships on behalf of the organization.

Most importantly, I have a voice at Premier. Of all our Culture Values, We Aim High is the one that sticks out to me. I feel that our project management group is given every opportunity to lead and to grow. I have the opportunity to talk to people at the highest levels without a lot of red tape. And I feel supported. I came to project management without a science background, but I have received the same opportunities as my colleagues with more traditional experience and advanced degrees.

Over the years, my line mangers have always pushed for me to pursue new opportunities. I think my ability to build relationships, communicate effectively, and keep things organized has helped me to be successful. I was even promoted shortly after returning from maternity leave, which reinforced my value and importance to the company. It feels like I am rewarded for my dedication, so I am working hard to prove that I appreciate and respect that recognition. My goal is to stay with Premier and just keep achieving more.
