Premier People: Alicia Heller, Clinical Research Associate II

Premier Value: We Care

I graduated with a degree in nursing and started as a staff nurse before deciding to switch to research. I became a study coordinator at the University of Cincinnati, where I stayed for 13 years. I loved getting to know the protocols, the sponsors, the CROs. I always loved working with Premier Research and formed a close friendship with a CRA there. So, when I learned there was an opportunity to train to be a Premier CRA, I just dove in. I have been swimming along ever since, and I absolutely love it.

I must admit, being a new CRA was scary. But at Premier, everyone—from the more experienced CRAs on my studies to line managers who don’t even know me—is always willing to help. People would say, “If you need anything, just contact me and I will answer any questions.” And they did. Knowing I had people I could rely on really made a difference in becoming successful.

I feel like mentorship is a part of the Premier team DNA. For example, there was a clinical lead who observed me once. She was not even working on the studies I supported, but when I started asking her questions about staying organized and being efficient, she immediately offered her guidance including templates she created to keep herself on track. I still use them, and she’s since told me I can forward them along to other new joiners.

That mentor spirit is something that’s really made me feel comfort as a part of the Premier team. I’ve always taken a leadership role in everything I’ve done, and now I am starting to participate in Premier-led leadership trainings so I can continue to grow within my career. I’m not sure where I want to land, but whether I eventually become a clinical lead, project manager, or even a line manager, I know that I want to help others. Right now, I am acting as a mentor to someone who just started at Premier. I’m proud I was entrusted with this responsibility.

And I feel I can offer a unique perspective to my external partners and team members – new and tenured. Because I was a study coordinator for so long, I have a complete understanding of what sites go through. I’m able to help the coordinators at my study sites to proactively prevent issues. I can also share insights from that part of my career with my fellow CRAs, and they share insights with me. We may work in different places, but we’re using creative communication methods, like chat spaces, to stay connected, share ideas and raise questions.

We all work together as one team—because we can’t do our jobs without each other.

If you are interested in working for a company where support and connection is a priority, Premier Research could be a great fit. See open positions here.
